7 Foods to Avoid on Keto

The keto diet shouldn’t be complicated. In fact, there are so many foods you can eat that it can be confusing on what to avoid.

That is, besides just meat and fats. There are a plethora of low carb vegetables out there.

However, before going full fledged keto, you may want to read our previous posts.

First, read about whether or not keto is right for you and then, of course, check out some of the most common keto mistakes you may not even realize you’re making.

7 Foods to Avoid on Keto Diet

In that post, we talk about why becoming good fat burners is a great goal, but the keto diet may not be good for everyone.

Dietary needs are an individual thing and the amount of carbs one eats in a day is also unique to each person.

With all that said, we realize that this keto diet is a craze right now and so want to help those who feel like it is right for them to know what they need to avoid.

So, if you’re new to the Keto diet or just need a refresher, here are 7 foods you will want to avoid while following this plan.

#1. Avoid Cow’s Milk

So, you’d think that the Keto diet would embrace cow’s milk because it’s high in fat. WRONG. Cow’s milk has a lot of sugar and carbs, which can be detrimental to your success on the Keto diet.

Instead of drinking a glass of milk, you can get your dairy fix from cheeses, unsweetened yogurt, and full fat cream.

#2. Avoid Grains

Whether you want to eat a big piece of all organic sourdough bread or you’re craving french toast, avoid these grains. In fact, avoid all grains. Grains in any shape or form are something to avoid on the Keto diet.

One reason to avoid grains is that most grain based products will quickly kick you out of ketosis due to the carb content.

Again, there may some lucky individuals who can still fit in a little grain and remain in ketosis, but most people are not so lucky.

#3. Anything with Excessive Sugar

Avoiding sugar can be so hard, especially on the Keto diet. Did you know that sugar has at least 56 different names? So, even if it doesn’t specifically say “sugar” on it, it could have sugar in it.

Always read the labels when you’re buying foods. Although it can be tough to avoid all sugar, give it your best shot.

Don’t forget that even though fruit is healthy, there are many fruits that are high in sugars and these natural sugars will also be too much if you want to remain in ketosis.

Juicing and blending smoothies can be healthy too but using fruits other than lemons and limes and maybe a few berries, gives you a very concentrated dose of sugar.

If you enjoy juicing, just juice more vegetables to keep the carbs and sugars low.

#4. Beans Beans Beans

You may think that beans are good for you. However, they are full of unsuspecting carbs! Usually any type of bean is chalk full of calories.

Lima beans, fava beans, pinto beans, all have carbs. Make sure you read how many carbs are in the beans you’re about to consume.

#5. Traditional fast food

This may seem like we are stating the obvious here. However, if you’re going to pull up to a fast food restaurant and order a #7, you really may be in trouble.

Fries, hamburgers, and sodas will cause you to over do it on the carbs.

If you decide to eat fast food, make sure you make it Keto friendly. Usually no sauces and no buns help make it more Keto friendly.

Mind you, keto friendly maybe so but most fast food is usually not healthy and the chemicals alone can disrupt your efforts to get healthy.

#6. Alcohol and sugary soda

There are Keto friendly alcoholic drinks to check out. Picking up a beer or a sugary soda isn’t going to help your Keto journey. Make sure you’re aware of what you’re eating and what you’re drinking on the Keto diet.

See why this lifestyle can be so challenging? Sure there are a few that maybe okay to sip but most alcoholic beverages are out of the question.

Of course we should also mention that we need to limit artificial sweeteners as they can trick your body. These sweeteners can mess up your metabolism and trigger more cravings as well as botch up ketosis in some cases.

#7. High carb fruits and veggies

You’d think that all fruits and veggies on the Keto diet are safe, but think again. While they’re better options than some of the bad foods out there, they can knock you out of Ketosis.

Know what can be eaten fruit and veggie wise, while on the Keto diet.

For example, you will want to choose lowest sugar and highest fiber fruits such as berries, lemons, limes, avocados. And also avoid starchy vegetables such as white potato and peas.
Bonus Tip:

Keep artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose to a minimum.

For some people, these trigger increased cravings for sweets.

Not only that, but a study done by Washinton University School of Medicine suggested the that sucralose actually creates an increase in insulin after ingestion and does affect metabolism.

Whether or not your desserts are “keto”, they should still be considered occasional treats and not a major part of your diet.
Summing it up (foods to avoid on keto)

There are so many wonderful healthy foods you can enjoy and say in ketosis. And now you also know some of the ones you need to avoid if you want to meet your keto goals.

One more thing we should at least mention here is that good quality meats and oils are very important! Processed meats sometimes contain sugars so be careful of packaged deli meats and such.

Organic meats are what we recommend and what we typically eat ourselves.
